Cox Communications is reaching out to Latinos with On Demand content and public service announcements as part of its partnership with The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and a new marketing campaign.
In its programming Cox has on offer, especially during the recent Hispanic Heritage Month, selections that focus on Hispanic American history, documentaries on education and housing issues as well as cooking shows and entertaining programs. Some of the On Demand offerings include Quinceanera (A Sony Pictures Classic Release), Camino a la Corona 2011 (Telemundo), Mira Quien Baila! (Look Who’s Dancing!, Univision), The Motorcycle Diaries (Universal), Latino List (HBO) and Tropico de Sangre (HBO Latino). Some programs are free and others range in price starting at $1.
“Cox is deeply committed to offering a rich diversity of educational and entertaining programming, such as the influential and award-winning selections that celebrate Hispanic heritage,” said Bob Nocera, director of new video services, Cox Communications. “It gives our customers an opportunity to revisit favorite titles, or explore a new genre of programming, with the convenience of On Demand.”
For the new marketing campaign Cox relied on Yarel Ramos. The campaign, in Arizona, California, Las Vegas, Oklahoma and New England markets, includes 30 and 60 second Spanish and English-language television and radio ads, direct mail, print, online banners and a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. The campaign was designed to drive traffic to Cox retail locations, calls into the call centers in Spanish or English and Cox’s websites.

TeleFórmula, a Spanish language news network based in Mexico City, Mexico targets Spanish dominant Mexican American adults in the United States. The network’s programming, produced entirely in Spanish in Mexico, is available nationwide, according to a spokesperson.
Owned by Grupo Formula, TeleFórmula claims three million viewers in Mexico and more than 50 percent of the Spanish language tier market in the United States, she said by email.
TeleFórmula relies on a personality driven format in which the hosts of TeleFórmula shows are also executive producers of their programs, reporting and interpreting the news and issues in their area of expertise.
Network programs include Todo Para la Mujer, hosted by Maxine Woodside and one of the highest rated shows on pay TV in Mexico offering entertainment news, gossip and interviews with actors and singers; La Formula es Deportes, a sports news hosted by Raul Orvaños; and Formula de la Tarde, hosted by Ciro Gomez Leyva, offering daily news updates with an emphasis on politics.

Next month programming executives at Vme, a 24-hour Spanish language network partnered with public television stations and available in 10 million homes across the country, hope to capture viewers attention with Estelares Vme, five international contemporary miniseries scheduled to air on four consecutive nights, Monday through Thursday at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), each week. Blood of the Templars, The Tunnel, D’artagnian and The Three Musketeers, Pompeii and Karol will air for the first time in the United States on Vme. Blood of the Templars, The Tunnel, and D’artagnian and The Three Musketeers were produced in Germany in the last decade. Karol and Pompeii were produced in Italy in 2007. The first miniseries airs Monday, August 1 through Thursday, August 4, 2011 La Sangre de los Templarios (Blood of the Templars), tells the story of David, a teen raised by monks without knowing the identity of his parents. When a sample of his blood is taken doctors discover he is the genetic heir that unites the two ancient orders of the Priors of Zion and the Knights Templar. El Túnel (The Tunnel), set in East Germany in 1961, is the story of Harry Melchior, who as the Berlin Wall begins construction, decides to escape into West Berlin. Though his sister, Lotte, and her daughter must stay behind, Harry swears he will return to rescue them. Once on the other side, he and his best friend, Matthis, plan an escape mission to free their loved ones. The series will air August 8 through Thursday, August 11, 2011.

D’artagnian and The Three Musketeers is scheduled to air Monday, August 15 through Thursday, August 18, 2011. The series is based on the famous swashbuckling adventure of Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D’artagnian who strive to save the Queen of France from the sinister Cardinal Richelieu and the nefarious sorceress, Milady de Winter.
In Pompeii, scheduled for Monday, August 22 through Thursday, August 25, 2011, a Roman soldier returns to the the famous resort city after a lengthy absence in search of peace and quiet. Instead he finds a conspiracy that threatens the ideals of a just and honest Rome and the emerging Christian movement. His struggles appear doomed to fail until the volcano erupts forcing the citizens of Pompeii to take a good look at what’s really important in life. This series is noted for its special effects and cinematography.

Finally, Karol, due to air Monday, August 29 through Thursday, September 1, 2011, is a biography about the first man to rise above the Iron Curtain to become pope. The series includes a musical score by Ennio Morricone. Despite an assassination attempt to silence him, John Paul II is said to have helped topple communism, uplift a downtrodden Mexico, aid the destitute and sick in Calcutta and attend to AIDS patients in Africa.

A team of eight reporters and hosts plus production staff will be responsible for E:60, the Spanish language sports network’s first news magazine was launched at 6 p.m. ET July 19, 2011. Hosted by José Ramón Fernández, David Faitelson and Jorge Ramos with Fernando Palomo, Fernando Schwartz, Guillermo Celis, Carolina Guillen and Martin Ainstein reporting the program will last one hour. The target audience are Hispanics in the United States. If the show becomes successful in the domestic market producers may expand its reach to Latin America. “With E:60, we are adding a new level of investigative reporting to our news, analysis and information programming that we offer to sports fans,” said Rodolfo Martínez, vice president of production, ESPN Deportes & ESPN International. “E:60 is sports news and more for our viewers; the show has in-depth analysis on the world of sports and athletes, as well as the impact that sports has in society.”
E:60 will present a six one-hour weekly editions from July 19 to August 23. E:60 is scheduled to feature stories about boxing, baseball and soccer stars, money and politics as well as profiles on backyard brawling, cockfighting, surfing dogs, supermodel kick boxers, Jamaican dog sledding, and alligator wrestling. The show’s format will feature a main story produced exclusively by ESPN Deportes along with segments previously featured on the English language E:60.

E:60 will give an overview of what players go through to be recognized by coaches and independent trainers, also known as “hustlers,” to achieve success. That show will examine the case of Brazilian soccer idol Bruno Souza, who allegedly planned the gruesome murder of his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child and is awaiting a trial date. Finally, the show will cover what the making of the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy by Tiffany & Co. the trophy over eight to ten weeks of manufacturing time.
ESPN Deportes offers multimedia sports coverage for U.S. Hispanic sports fans via ESPN Deportes television, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPNDeportes.com, ESPN Deportes La Revista, and wireless through ESPN Deportes Mobile. ESPN Deportes television offers Spanish-language sports programming, more than 2,500 live or original hours of sports programming annually and available in 5.3 million Hispanic households.

Starting July 24 Vme will air four music specials produced in Spain in 2010. Three of the four programs, which range in length from 24 minutes to 47 minutes, were produced by Especial 40 Principales. The programs, airing for the first time in the United States on Vme, are Bosé Por Amaia, Do you Spanglish?, Shakira Integral, 24 Horas con Alejandro Fernández and De Gira Por España. Except for De Gira Por España they will air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

Hosted by Amaia Montero the music specials feature intimate conversations, backstage access, and performances. The first one, Bosé Por Amaia will air Sunday, July 24. During the program Miguel Bose discusses his music, his poetic lyrics, his sense of fashion, his love of cooking and his family.
Shakira
Do you Spanglish? airing on Sunday, July 31 is about the crossover attempts into Spanish by well known English speaking artists. The special showcases the efforts of Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, David Bowie, Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion, Justin Timberlake and Madonna.
Shakira makes a splash on Sunday, August 7 in Shakira Integral. Three years in the making, this program showcases the popular singer’s rise from a teen star in Colombia to an international celebrity. The producers relied on hundreds of interviews with fans, collaborators and leading artists to make the program which features highlights of Shakira’s live performances over the length of her career.

Sunday, August 14 the final two music specials are devoted to Alejandro Fernandez, a Mexican performer. In 24 Horas con Alejandro Fernandez cameras follow the star through one complete day of his tour, accompanying him in the hotel, on the bus, backstage and during the performance. The show also features interviews with Fernandez and his crew. That same night at 9:30 p.m. De Gira Por España will follow 24 Horas con Alejandro Fernandez. That program takes fans behind the scenes and backstage for the making of a live performance.

Starting last week ESPN Deportes Radio began offering exclusive live broadcasts of the Copa America 2011 through July 29, 2011. The network’s soccer commentators are scheduled to broadcast all 26 matches live from Argentina across multiple platform and present special post-game shows. The first broadcast was of the Argentina versus Bolivia game on July 1.
On July 11, Mario “El Matador” Kempes, a representative of ESPN Deportes and an Argentinean World Cup champion, will be calling the Argentina versus Costa Rica match for the network in a stadium that bears his own name in Córdoba. He will also provide his expert analysis on Argentinean matches. ESPN Deportes Radio soccer experts covering the championship include Jorge Ramos, Jairo Moncada, Omar Orlando Salazar, Hernán Pereyra, Manuel Kun, and Ricardo Mayorga.
“We are excited about bringing our listeners into the action at Copa America 2011 with our extensive live coverage from Argentina,” said Oscar Ramos, senior director and general manager, ESPN Deportes Radio. “In addition to the live games, our programming line-up will allow for great interaction between our listeners and their favorite experts which will undoubtedly make for some great debates in our wide range of news and talk shows.”

ESPN Deportes Radio plans to present Después de la Copa, a post-game show with analysis of each day’s games. Jorge Ramos y su Banda, the radio network’s signature soccer talk show, is scheduled to broadcast on location throughout the entire tournament.
Also planned is best in class Copa America 2011 analysis and commentary and a daily special edition of Fuera de Juego at 1 a.m. EST. Ciro Procuna, Rafa Puente, and Fernando Schwartz will be reporting from Argentina.
ESPNdeportes.com plans to feature extensive Copa America 2011 coverage in a dedicated section with pre and post analysis of the matches, statistics, online videos, and podcasts. Online coverage will include blogs, editorials, and chats with ESPN Deportes talent reporting from Argentina. ESPN Deportes Radio is a United States national Spanish-language sports radio network.

Beginning this month CNN en Español will offer hundreds of hours of coverage of the 2012 United States presidential race to its Spanish speaking viewers. Ten on air talent and dozens of production support staff will offer live coverage from 30 cities and reports extending to the fifty states of the nation. Producers of Voto Latino 2012 (Hispanic Vote 2012) plan to share news with viewers on what some speculate may be the most expensive presidential election in history with as many as 20 million voters at the polls.
Plans are for Juan Carlos López and the political team of the network to seek the opinions and views of primary voters and attend the national political parties’ conventions. Bianca Pitaluga will discuss the youth perspective and Gustavo Valdes will focus on the impact of Latino voters.

The special coverage is designed to include perspectives about employment, economy, health, immigration, national security and education. Segments from the political features are expected to air on different programs including Café CNN, NotiMujer, and Panorama Mundial as well as during candidate debates, national political conventions, and primaries.
CNN en Español, CNN’s independently produced network in Spanish, provides 24-hour news coverage of major world events, live breaking coverage, business and financial news, weather updates, sports and feature programming on health, technology and entertainment.

In addition to targeting cooking aficionados and young children (see Starting today Vme, National Wildlife Federation to air translated program for preschool kids and National Spanish language TV network offers extensive cooking programming) Vme programming executives want to reach adults 18 to 49 years of age. With that goal in mind the Spanish language network is launching No Matarás, a German produced series making its United States debut on Vme this month. The show was translated into Spanish.
No Matarás (Spanish for You Will Not Kill) features Father Simon Castell (Francis Fulton-Smith), a special commissioner of the Holy See and the Vatican’s personal private eye, and Marie Blank (Christine Döring), his police partner, as a crime fighting duo. Vme plans to broadcast 15 episodes of the hour long program produced by UFA International Film and TV Production GmbH and shot in Rome and Caprarola.
In the program, Father Castell is cast as handsome, outgoing, and tenacious with an atypical personality to match the job the Vatican has assigned him. He is aided in his task by a good sense of humor, a fanatical love of soccer and the ability to crack safes. His partner is a police inspector described as a clever and tough single mom. The two team up to catch crooks and build a sometimes difficult relationship that relies on his knowledge of the church and her knowledge of the streets. The episodes will air at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday nights beginning May 11, 2011.

Only 9 percent of Latinos in the United States are monolingual Spanish speakers and 22 percent are monolingual English speakers, according to United States Census estimates. The rest of the population, about 70 percent, speak both languages with varying degrees of proficiency.
The North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE) believes there are as many as 45 million Spanish speakers in the United States. Academy leaders want Spanish speakers in the United States to maintain and improve their Spanish language skills. To that end the organization began placing segments on Univision Channel 41 and on stations in Texas and California in 2010. Now the organization has teamed up with five impreMedia print publications to continue its outreach efforts.
“I am delighted to know that our language tips are appearing little by little in the most important Hispanic newspapers in the country,” said Gerardo Piña-Rosales, president, ANLE. “One of our basic missions is to disseminate Spanish, and with the collaboration of the media, I am sure that they, too, will benefit from our advice. Together we will assure that Hispanics increasingly use an international Spanish that, although born in Castilla, has become firmly rooted in the Americas.”
Academy volunteers write the columns, one per day, and provide slightly different materials for the broadcast media outlets. The Academy receives no outside funding for the work nor does it remunerate its volunteers financially, according to a representative of the organization who replied to questions by email.
“Just when the Hispanic population surpasses 50 million, it is of vital importance to establish a bridge between the Academy and the press to better serve the language and our cultures,” said Jorge Ignacio Covarrubias, secretary of the board of ANLE and chair of the information committee.
Beginning last month, five impreMedia Spanish language newspapers will carry advice columns on the Spanish language prepared by the North American Academy of the Spanish Language. The papers publishing the language tips are El Diario-La Prensa in New York, La Opinion in Los Angeles, La Prensa in Orlando, La Raza in Chicago and Rumbo in Houston.
“One of the basic functions of a news organization is to educate our communities,” said Pedro Rojas, executive editor, La Opinion. “I am sure that these columns will be the perfect tool to help us improve our command of Spanish. What better way than with the guidance and collaboration of the ANLE.”
According to promotional materials impreMedia owns nine print publications and eleven on-line news services via mobile phones. Founded in 1973, the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española is the youngest of 22 national academies that make up the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española, an international association of Spanish language academies. Last year ANLE published a book (see New York organization provides Spanish language tips, advice for North Americans) with Spanish language tips for Spanish speakers in the United States.

The National Wildlife Federation(NWF) and Vme want Spanish speaking children to appreciate nature. In an effort to reach Hispanic preschoolers and their families the television network and the not for profit organization have teamed up to launch a TV series in Spanish scheduled to premiere today.
Animalitos Exploradores (Wild Animal Baby Explorers) will air daily at 8:45 a.m. during the Vme Niños block of programming for children that airs between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (ET) and the 24/7 cable channel Vme Kids. Eighty segments have been dubbed into Spanish from the original English language 15 minute episodes.
Based on NWF’s preschool magazine, Wild Animal Baby, the show is a combination of 3D animated characters and high-definition live-action footage. The program features five intrepid wildlife characters and an NSI (Natural Science Investigator) unit while they explore the natural world around them. According to promotional materials, Animalitos Exploradores showcases young children and families engaging in simple and easily executable outdoor activities designed to teach them to appreciate nature.
