The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of events that began last week and last through October including The Invention of Glory: Afonso V and the Pastrana Tapestries, a visiting exhibition the result of the collaboration of a number of organizations, as well as several Spanish masterpieces in the Gallery’s collection. The Pastrana Tapestries will remain at the museum from September 18, 2011 through January 8, 2012. The Pastrana Tapestries, considered to be among the finest Gothic tapestries in the world, commemorate the conquest of two strategically located cities in Morocco by the king of Portugal, Afonso V (1432–1481).

The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery and the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, Madrid in association with the embassies of Spain and Portugal, the Spain-USA Foundation, and with the cooperation of the embassies of Belgium and Morocco in Washington, DC, as well as the Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Pastrana, Spain.

From Washington, the Pastrana Tapestries will travel to the Meadows Museum, Dallas, Texas (February 5–May 13, 2012); the San Diego Museum of Art (June 10–September 9, 2012); and the Indianapolis Museum of Art (October 5, 2012–January 6, 2013). The exhibition was made possible through the support of the governments of Spain, Belgium and Portugal.

The conservation of the tapestries, undertaken at the initiative of the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, with support from the Belgian InBev-Baillet Latour Fund, Fundación Caja Madrid, Region of Castilla—La Mancha, Provincial Council of Guadalajara, and Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara and Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Pastrana, received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards 2011.

Julia Burke, senior conservator, and Diane Arkin, lecturer, at the Gallery will discuss the Tapestries November 14, 15, 29, and December 6, 8. Sunday, December 18 Barbara von Barghahn, professor of art history, The George Washington University will discuss an Introduction to the Exhibition at the East Building Auditorium.

William S. Hettinger, Ph.D., a consultant and educator, and John Dolan-Heitlinger, MBA, a consultant and business executive, believe the long term success of a business is tied directly to the owner’s and manager’s ability to understand where the money comes from and where it goes; that business acumen is not enough if the owner or person heading a business doesn’t understand the financial issues pertaining to his or her company. It is their belief that to control a business it is necessary to understand the numbers.

“You can fix practically any business problem but only if you first understand where your money comes from,” said Dolan-Heitlinger.

They outline what they consider essential financial knowledge for a business in Finance Without Fear: A Guide to Creating and Managing a Profitable Business, a 312-page softcover book published this year by the Institute for Finance & Entrepreneurship with a retail price of $25.95.

The book, they indicate in the Introduction, was written to explain the essential issues of finance and how to use finance as a tool to those starting or expanding a business, managers wishing to apply financial principles to their business, board members who want to broaden their knowledge of the finance of the business, and students.

“You may think finance is complicated and intimidating,” said Hettinger, “but it’s really not that difficult to understand. Not understanding financial statements leaves you open to being blindsided.”

The book is divided into 21 chapters and four main sections: Introduction, Financial Statements, Tools to Help You Make Money, and Building and Operating Your Business to Make Money.

Hettinger is president of Prosperous Communities, a housing and economic development consultancy. He is the author of several other books including Living and Working in Paradise: Why Housing is Too Expensive and What Communities Can Do about It which analyzes the causes of housing market failure in resort communities.

Dolan-Heitlinger is the president of D-H & Associates Consulting, a business management and governance consultancy. He has been consultant, chief executive officer and senior executive for more than 25 years in diverse economic and demographic environments. Retired as a Coast Guard Reserve commander, Dolan-Heitlinger had commands and leadership positions in the homeland security and disaster response fields.

Both are principals at the Institute for Finance and Entrepreneurship which provides training and mentoring to small business owners.

San Francisco marketer shines light on Latino conservation innovators

Graciela Tiscareno-Sato, owner, Gracefully Global Group believes some Latinos strive to create social and industrial innovation to reuse, preserve and conserve resources. The San Francisco resident, formerly a member of the U.S. Air Force, authored Latinnovating Green American Jobs and the Latinos Creating Them (Gracefully Global Group, $25), a 211-page softcover book showcasing ten examples of Latino led innovation and entrepreneurship that in her opinion have escaped the attention of national media.

The idea behind the book is sustainability “as a foundation for 21 century survival and growth,” she explains in the Introduction. The book was born of the frustration Tiscareno-Sato felt at the opportunities she believes were missed by the media of identifying the efforts of everyday Latinos contributing to the green movement.

The book is divided into one section each for a Latino innovator in addition to Introduction and Final Thoughts chapters: Carmen Rad, Eco-friendly printing leader; Rodrigo Prudencio, Venture capitalist; Rosamaria Caballero-Stafford, Eco-consultant; Luis Rojas, Accountant turned solar developer; Sandra Artalejo, Fashion designer and queen of creative reuse; Dennis Salazar, Packaging industry thought leader; Humberto Rincon, Mechanical Engineer reducing consumption; Monica DeZulueta, Engineer reducing carbon footprints; Robert Zardeneta, Social justice leader transforming communities; and Frank Ramirez, Entrepreneur solving energy storage problems.

The chapters are the result of an initial questionnaire followed by individual interviews and research about each case study. It is her belief that Latinos follow an old cultural mandate to conserve and preserve natural resources.

Tiscareno-Sato was recognized by Latina Style Magazine as the San Francisco Bay Area Entrepreneur of the Year in May 2010. In November 2010, she was selected Entrepreneur of the Year at the Anna Maria Arias Memorial Business Fund Gala in Washington D.C.

Mexican restaurants popular, consumption of ethnic foods to increase

Earlier this month, Rock Hard Taco, a Mexican cuisine restaurant with a So-Cal style atmosphere, opened in Boca Raton, Florida (scroll down for the Rock Hard Taco Mahi Mahi Tacos recipe courtesy of Rock Hard Taco). Not too far south in Miami Mercadito Midtown serves creative Mexican cuisine, especially tacos.

The Mercadito restaurant and its sister properties specializing in Latin American cuisine are owned and operated by Mercadito Hospitality, a company that has grown from a first New York City location in 2004 to four restaurants. The company, owned by Alfredo Sandoval, Felipe Sandoval and Patricio Sandoval, has a second restaurant in New York and one Chicago.

What down economy? You wouldn’t know there is a stagnant economy in the country by watching this company’s growth. Mercadito Hospitality, which also owns and operates Double A, an exclusive cocktail lounge next to Mercadito in Chicago, plans to open Tavernita, a second Chicago restaurant, this summer and a second one in Miami this fall. Company executives believe their success can be attributed to the innovative interpretations of traditional Mexican cooking of Chef Patricio Sandoval, and the complex flavored beverages on offer.

At the same time that ethnic food restaurants gain popularity nationwide (see Hispanic, Asian foods booming ) the popular food truck movement in urban areas and television cooking programs nationwide may be the continuing catalyst for at home trial of ethnic foods. It seems there is room for growth in varied ethnic food types, according to Ethnic Foods U.S. January 2011, a Mintel (a research company) survey released earlier this year.

The more consumers are exposed to foreign cultures and cuisines the more likely they may be to try preparing some of those dishes at home, especially this year when many families are eating at home frequently due to increases in unemployment and related issues. Mintel analysts believe consumers preparing ethnic foods at home are more likely to be of a nationality or heritage different than that of the food type they are preparing.

For example, although less than 65 percent of the population is Italian 65 percent of survey responders said that they prepared at least one Italian meal at home in the past month. Similar percentages were evidenced for other ethnic foods: Mexican (60 percent), Chinese (42 percent), Spanish/Tapas (17 percent), Japanese (16 percent), Greek (12 percent), Indian (13 percent ), Thai (12 percent), and Korean (8 percent).
