On June 4 and 5, 2009 Billboard and Adweek partnered to host the first conference catered to music and advertising. The two day Music and Advertising Conference held at the W hotel in New York brought together industry insiders of the music and advertising world which focused on the importance of music incorporated in commercials and advertising campaigns. Thirty-one sponsors like Studio Media Group, H & M, and Sonicbids, along with the panelists and 400 people attendees heard presentations about making the connection between music brands and bands.

Conference highlights included a question and answer session with Bill Werde, editorial editor, Billboard and Steve Stoute, founder and chief creative officer, Translation LLC. Stoute was responsible for doing Chris Brown’s Wrigley gum deal stated that client Brown may still have a shot, in reference to his client’s run in with the law. He announced Translation recently signed Lady Gaga and plans to treat her as a brand.

Another conference highlight was a sit down with Pharrel Williams, the Neptunes, producer and front man who recently partnered with Cornerstone to create a new agency. He spoke about how Teddy Riley, producer and front man for R&B group Guy gave him his first brake. Williams elaborated on how his deal and ad campaign for Converse shoes came about.

As record sales have declined music record companies and artists have looked at other ways to offset costs and new ways to make revenues. According to panelist David Keefer, global director, Media and Entertainment, Siegel and Gale simplified branding as “what you think, feel, and visual experience you get, or as what you hear, taste and touch.”

The conference emphasized the importance of music and branding, and how many acts have benefited and piggy backed off of branding opportunities. One such act was Australian duo The Veronicas who spoke on how they contributed music and how their music took off after they helped Bayer brand Yaz, a birth control pill.

Companies all desire and seek, one on one interaction between their brand, and the Latino consumer. This year 100 companies like AT&T and State Farm Insurance sponsored the 20th Fiesta Broadway held April 26,2009 in downtown Los Angeles. More than 500,000 Fiesta-goers attended the event, a 10 percent increase, according to All Access Entertainment, the festival producers.

Some believe Fiesta Broadway, a free event, is one of the nation’s largest, family friendly events. Fiesta Broadway, designed to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, offered attendees music, food, and entertainment in a 36 square block area of downtown Los Angeles in honor of this important date in 1862.

Since its debut in 1990, anticipation is set on this yearly event in celebration and remembrance of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza who defeated the French Army on May 5, 1862 in the Battle of Puebla. This Mexican victory was a surprise for the French Army was said to be much larger and better equipped than the Mexican army. Cinco de Mayo is a popular date for people of Mexican descent to recognize the bravery of those who fight against oppression.

Fiesta Broadway featured Latin music and entertainment on multiple concert stages and offered branding and sponsorship opportunities for companies targeting the large and growing Latino population of Los Angeles. This year’s highlights included performances by Mexican Regional acts Graciela Beltran, Rogelio Martinez, and El Chapo de Sinaloa who was given the key to the city and also acted as the Fiesta’s grand marshal.

Concluding the Fiesta Broadway 20th anniversary week of activities was the 7th annual Charity Golf Tournament held May 4, 2009, benefitting four non-profit organizations, National Institute of Transplantation, Los Angeles Children’s Museum, Camp Ronald McDonald, and Para los Niños (For the Kids).

The 20th Annual Billboard Latin Conference and Awards and Voz Latina Conference for song writers, artists, agents, artist managers, promoters, music publishers, marketers, and others targeting Latinos took place April 21-23, 2009 at the Eden Roc Beach Resort and Spa in Miami Beach. Approximately 1,000 people attended the panels, celebrity Q & A (questions and answer sessions), music showcases such as the 7th Annual Billboard Bash, and the 2009 Billboard Latin Music Awards broadcast live from Bank United Center in Miami.

The music industry highpoint of this year’s conference was a full question and answer session with Puerto Rican William Omar Ladron, known to fans as Don Omar, who gave attendees a first look at the video of the first single “Virtual Diva” from his new studio album, Idon. He talked about new ways of reaching his fans, new business models that are being put to the test and content he plans to make available to fans who buy one of his CD’s.

One of the bonuses his fans will receive will be a new song featuring Daddy Yankee, a fellow reggaeton performer he used to have a long standing feud with. Don Omar spoke about his acting debut role in the new Fast & Furious movie and his plans to retire in five years and run his music record label, Orfanato Music Group. During the Billboard Awards, Daddy Yankee received the Spirit Of Hope Award for his Corazon Guerrero Foundation ( Warrior Heart Foundation) whose mission is to help troubled and under served youth.

The three-day event ended with Voz Latina, a day long conference that catered to marketers and companies aiming to reach Hispanic consumers. The highlight of the Voz Latina event was a presentation by Jacqueline Hernandez, chief operating officer of Telemundo Communications Group and the day’s keynote speaker. She spoke on the best way for companies to tap into what she called “crucial Hispanic market” by using integrated advertising solutions, innovative models and success stories to help marketers and advertisers achieve their financial goals. Other panels and topics covered Spanish- Language content online, Interactive strategies to reach your target audience, Who wears the pants: The influential consumer, Tecate Case Study: growing in English by speaking in Spanish, and How to market in a recession.

This year’s sponsors included State Farm, Verizon Wireless, Burger King, Coca-Cola, Georgio Vodka, CMN (Cardenas Marketing Network), Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA), MTVtres, MySpace Latino, American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers(ASCAP), Bustelo Coffee, Gibson guitars, and Locman.
